The actress has always been very open about her struggle with the condition.
Actress and writer Lena Dunham has made no secret of the fact she suffers from endometriosis, the at-times incredibly painful condition which sees cells similar to those that line the womb, outside the womb.
This causes a number of traumatic repercussions including painfully heavy periods, pain in the lower abdomen, pain during sex, and difficulty with getting pregnant.
But until recently, with the likes of Lena Dunham and Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley opening up about the fact they have the condition and raising awareness about it, it wasn’t a particularly ‘spoken about’ thing. That’s despite the fact that 2 million women in the UK alone are thought to have the disease.
Girls creator Lena has continued her crusade to open up conversation about lesser talked about disorders like endometriosis this week on Instagram, as she posed in a bikini with her endometriosis scars on full show.
Proudly, Dunham can be seen in her Instagram story taking a photo of herself in the mirror, with the caption: “when the Target swimsuit does a bitch right, endo scars & all”.
The best thing about Lena’s picture – given that she’s not exactly shy about taking her clothes off, have you seen Girls? – is that she’s sending out such a positive message for anyone who might have scars they feel uncomfortable with on their body, whether they’re from endometriosis or not.
Lena knows she looks great, and a few scars as a result of a condition which is just part of her life are not going to stop her feeling it. Endometriosis is just a thing (sometimes an incredibly painful thing) that she has to deal with; likewise, the scars are just another part of that and they’re something she’s accepted, rightly so.
So here’s hoping other women who suffer from disorders such as endometriosis take comfort in this post, because there’s no need to hide the physical marks of it.
